 Key Free College Programs in MA

  • MassEducate & MassReconnect: Covers tuition, fees, and includes a stipend for books/supplies ($1,200-$2,400) for eligible students at community colleges.
  • MassGrant Plus Expansion: Covers 100% of tuition and mandatory fees for high-need students.
  • UMass Community College Advantage Scholarship: Provides $2,500 per semester for students transferring from a community college to a UMass campus after earning their associate degree.
  • University Level: UMass campuses offer free tuition for families earning $75,000 or less.
  • Private Institutions: Some private institutions, such as Smith College, offer free tuition for students from families earning less than $150,000 annually. 


Eligibility Requirements

  1. Residency: Must have physically resided in Massachusetts for at least one year.
  2. Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED/HiSET).
  3. FAFSA: Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  4. Enrollment: Must be enrolled in at least six credits (roughly two classes) per semester.
  5. Degree Status: Must not have already completed a bachelor's degree. 


Participating Institutions

All Massachusetts public community colleges participate, including: 

  • MassBay Community College
  • Northern Essex Community College (NECC)
  • Springfield Technical Community College (STCC)
  • Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC)
  • Massasoit Community College
  • Quincy College


 The Bridgewater Commitment at Bridgewater State University (BSU) covers the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees for eligible in-state undergraduate students with household incomes of $125,000 or less, starting in Fall 2025. This initiative applies to full-time (12-17 credits) first-year, returning, and transfer students who complete the FAFSA. 


University + Key Details of the Bridgewater Commitment (Fall 2025 & Fall 2026)


  • Eligibility: Must be a Massachusetts resident, a full-time undergraduate (12-17 credits), and have a family income of $125,000.
  • Coverage: Covers all tuition and mandatory fees

             (not room/board).

  • Application: Students must complete the FAFSA form by the March 1 priority deadline.
  • Duration: The program supports students for up to four years, provided they maintain residency and income requirements.
